The Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Harris County’s (METRO) board last week approved funding for security-related initiatives, including the addition of 20 part-time metro police officers.
The new positions will report in various police units, including rail, patrol, criminal investigation and K-9.
In addition to adding more police officers, the Texas agency’s board approved a three-year, $3.4 million deep-cleaning contract to increase the frequency and detail of cleaning at all rail stations and transit centers.
"It's about taking pride in our product, and that begins with making sure the environment we offer our customers is clean and well maintained,” said METRO President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Lambert in a press release. “That also goes a long way in improving security.”
Meanwhile, Robert Fry, former mayor of West University Place, was appointed to the board for a two-year term to represent 14 smaller cities in METRO’s service area. He succeeds Cindy Siegel.
Board member Don Elder, who also represents smaller cities, was sworn in for a second term.
