L.A. Metro OKs $82 million contract to add more security officers

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) late last week awarded an $82 million contract to RMI International Inc. to nearly double the number of contract security officers on its system.

Additional staff will be placed at key hubs, rail stations and parking facilities, with some officers assigned to safeguard critical infrastructure, Metro officials said in a press release. The high-visibility presence augments video surveillance and includes some 24/7 patrols.

"In the last 26 years, Metro has added 105 miles of rail, more than 100 rail stations and numerous transit centers," said Metro Chair John Fasana. "This is action to enhance security is a critical step in ensuring our passengers have a safe and secure experience."

The added security is necessary to support ridership growth, improve rider retention, improve the "perception of safety" by riders and employees, and provide additional resources to first responders, said Alex Wiggins, Metro chief systems, security and law enforcement officer.

The contract is effective Oct. 1, 2016, through Sept. 30, 2017.
