The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Police Department has received a $1.4 million grant to support officer recruitment and law enforcement strategies.

The funds come from the American Rescue Plan State Fiscal Recovery Fund Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction grant program, MARTA officials said in a press release.

Announced by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, the grant "will enable us to bolster our resources and enhance our ability to provide effective law enforcement services, further strengthening our partnership with the community," said MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher.

MARTA recently reported a 17% decrease in violent and property crimes and a 42% drop in operator assaults. The MARTA Ride with Respect program has resulted in more than 5,000 temporary system suspensions for violators and more than 70 permanent bans. MARTA also works with Hope Atlanta to provide resources to unsheltered individuals throughout the transit network.

Last week, MARTA received the American Public Transportation Association's 2023 Rail Security Gold Award in the heavy-rail category for its security programs.
