The Metropolitan Transportation Authority yesterday announced plans to install security cameras in every New York City Transit subway car by 2025's end.

A $2 million grant from the Urban Area Security Initiative federal program, provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will help fund the installation of 5,400 cameras in 2,700 cars (two per car), MTA officials said in a press release. The total cost of the work is $5.5 million.

The program — which targets rider safety and security — will also fund 3,800 cameras to expand coverage in 130 subway stations. The existing camera network includes more than 10,000 cameras in all 472 subway stations.

"Those who commit crimes in the transit system will be identified and brought to justice. Riders should know we've got their back for their entire journey," said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber.

The new funding covers the cost of camera installations on 6,355 cars, supplementing an existing camera pilot program that includes 200 cameras in 100 subway cars, MTA officials said. Funding of $3.5 million from the state's Subway Action Plan, launched in 2017 by former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, will also enable the purchase of 7,310 cameras.

When installation begins, an additional 200 cars per month will have cameras installed until the entire fleet is camera-equipped. Additionally, when new R211 subway cars that begin arriving in early 2023 will come camera-equipped.
