NJ Transit awarded DHS grant to update security cameras

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) yesterday awarded New Jersey Transit a $2.3 million grant to purchase and install new security cameras and related equipment at dozens of locations along the Atlantic City and Northeast Corridor rail lines in South Jersey.

NJ Transit will use the funds to purchase more than 500 single- and multi-sensor cameras, and specialized video-recording equipment with tracking and intrusion-detection software.

The new cameras will replace analog cameras and other older equipment, NJ Transit officials said in a press release.

The agency will install integrated closed-circuit TV systems equipment at 21 locations along the River Line light-rail system, and cameras at the Hamilton, Princeton Junction, Absecon, Hammonton, Cherry Hill and Long Branch rail stations.

Funds were provided through Homeland Security’s Transit Security Grant Program, which awards up to $88 million for projects nationwide.
