The New Jersey Transit Police Department late last week began using social networking app Nextdoor to boost community policing efforts.

Using the app's public agency platform, NJ Transit police will be able to geo-target Nextdoor users who live within a mile of commuter- and light-rail lines, as well as bus terminals.

By doing this, police will be able to inform residents of nearby criminal activity, educate locals on how to report suspicious activity on the app and provide information how to teach children about the dangers of railroad tracks, according to an agency press release.

In addition, the Nextdoor partnership is expected to increase the number of residents who interact with NJ Transit police officers who patrol nearby stations and terminals.
