TransLink has increased fare enforcement patrols throughout metro Vancouver, British Columbia.
The determent measures aim to reduce fare evasion by CA$5 million each year, TransLink officials said in a press release.
The security increase is part of efforts announced in June to close the agency's funding gap with CA$90 million in cost-cutting measures. TransLink also will step up customer outreach on how to pay, which fare products to use, and how to access reduced-cost or free transit passes.
Heightened security and an increase in proof of payment requirements already have begun across the transit system and will continue to expand. People found evading payment will be issued infraction tickets, agency officials said.
“Transit fares are an integral part of how we pay for transit services in metro Vancouver,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.
