The Port of Whitman County, Wash., last week issued a request for proposals for firms interested in drafting a 10-year strategic plan for the state's Grain Train program.
The Washington State Grain Train provides the state's farmers access to state and port-owned grain cars for shipping agricultural products —primarily wheat and barley — to domestic and foreign markets. The Washington State Department of Transportation partners with the three port districts — Walla Walla, Whitman County and Moses Lake — to manage and oversee the program.
Created in 1994, the Grain Train in 2014 reached a record year of tonnage due to an inadequate supply of Class I-owned grain cars in the western United States, Whitman County officials said in a press release.
The strategic plan will be used to update the program's business goals.
Firms interested in responding to the RFP should send an electronic copy of their proposal by April 26 to port@portwhitman.com.
