Smart Sand Inc. yesterday announced plans to expand its siding and transload facility on a Union Pacific Railroad line in Byron Township, Wis., due to increased demand for its Northern White frac sand.

To be completed in about six months, the expansion will accommodate unit train shipments from Smart Sand's Byron facility. The company also is evaluating other operating basin locations along UP's network to develop additional unit-train-capable transload facilities.

"The expansion of our Byron transload facility to be unit train capable positions us to take full advantage of the Union Pacific rail network to provide competitive and efficient transportation services to our customers in all operating basins which UP serves," said Smart Sands Chief Executive Officer Charles Young in a press release.
