The Virginia Maritime Association International Trade Symposium has presented The Andersons Inc. with the 2018 Shipper of the Year Award.

The annual award recognizes an "exceptional shipper" that works with the Port of Virginia to make it better for all users, port officials said in a press release.

Thomas Capozzi, the port's chief sales officer, presented the award to Michael Anderson, the company's vice president of risk and central merchandising.

The Andersons has operated a facility near Norfolk International Terminals since 2014, but has been a partner with the port for decades through interior locations that move containers to the port via rail.

Between the Norfolk location, economics, fast turn times and its relationship with the port, the company has continued to increase its volume through the port by more than 12,000 20-foot-equivalent units in the past year, port officials said.

The company is expanding its Norfolk facility to increase business, create efficiencies and expand services.

"The Andersons container business has created a strong team infrastructure dedicated to establishing relationships with steamship lines, truckers, facilities and ports such as the Port of Virginia," Capozzi said.
