Smart Sand Inc. has begun operations at its new Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, transloading terminal, which features more than 4 miles of track and connects to a Norfolk Southern Railway line.
The terminal is unit-train capable and serves the southwest portion of the Marcellus Shale Basin. The company expects the terminal to handle more than 1 million tons of frac sand per year. The facility will also serve as Smart Sand’s new northeastern hub for its last-mile storage and transloading services.
Smart Sand, which primarily works with oil and natural gas companies, is a producer of Northern White frac sand and also offers logistics, storage and management services. In addition, the company operates frac sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois.
"The shortened truck rides will reduce carbon emissions and enhance safety, thus serving important environmental, social and governance goals that [we are] determined to fulfill," said Smart Sand CEO Charles Young in a press release.
