Union Pacific Railroad recently offered tips to rail shippers for how to prepare for a hurricane.
Forecasters predict that there will be 20 to 25 named storms in 2024, compared to 19 in 2023, according to a report on UP's website. Among those named storms in 2024, eight to 12 are expected to be hurricanes, with four to seven to be major hurricanes.
UP suggested the following steps for rail shippers to take before the storm:• Divert cars. If your facility is in the path of a storm, five days before landfall divert any rail cars headed your way;• Notify the railroad. Submit special service requests to the railroad three to four days before the storm; and• Communicate your plant operations plan. At least 48 hours before landfall, let the railroad know of your timeline for ceasing operations and/or evacuating the plant. Continue to communicate with the railroad on your operations plan so that service can resume as quickly as possible.
After the storm, shippers should report track damage; provide a plant operations update; and request resumption of rail service.
