Brookhaven Rail Terminal (BRT) is currently transporting 2,100 tons of sand to Long Island, New York, to meet demand from regional golf courses.
The silica sand made of silicon dioxidel is used in sand trap bunkers on Long Island golf courses.
The thousands of tons of silica sand arrive by rail from quarries in Ohio, then are offloaded at BRT and stored until required by golf courses. With more than 140 courses on the island, demand is not expected to diminish anytime soon.
“There is little doubt the demand to replenish the sand traps has picked up as COVID rules disappear and golfing parties return to the links. We are seeing a significant uptick in silica sand demand,” said BRT President Andrew Kaufman in a news release.
The silica sand is typically transported in a 100-ton rail car, helping to take hundreds of heavy trucks off Long Island roadways that already support considerable truck traffic, BRT officials said.
