The National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) recently sent letters to President Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney asking them to outline their views on addressing investment in the nation’s transportation infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on freight transportation.

League officials also asked the candidates to provide their views on the rising costs of energy, greenhouse gas emissions and security impacts on transportation.

League members are concerned about existing problems with the nation’s transportation infrastructure, and the difficulties that U.S. companies face in moving products efficiently and effectively, said NITL President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Carlton in a prepared statement. Of particular concern is the need to identify new sources of funding not only to meet growing infrastructure demands, but the resources needed to maintain the existing transportation system, he said.

The letter to Obama notes that while the public is aware of the past steps taken by his administration, “we would respectfully invite you to provide us your perspective on what new initiatives might be expected in your second term” if reelected. The letter to Romney asks him to provide details on what his administration would undertake to address the same issues.

“It is important to the future of the economic health of our nation that we understand how both candidates will address these vital areas,” said Carlton.
