The South Carolina Ports Authority registered its highest July on record for containers moving through the Port of Charleston.

The port last month handled an all-time-high 244,821 20-foot equivalent units at the Wando Welch, North Charleston and Hugh K. Leatherman terminals, up 38% year over year.

The port also logged 137,158 pier containers — which account for boxes of any size — in July, up 38%.

The volumes mark the second-highest monthly record for containers handled at the Port of Charleston. Loaded imports also reached a record level last month and climbed 47% as retail continues to boom, while loaded exports rose 14%, SC Ports officials said in a news release.

In addition, the port handled 15,450 vehicles at the Columbus Street Terminal in July, while Inland Port Greer and Inland Port Dillon handled a combined 13,976 rail moves.
