Director of Operations
Pacific Harbor Line Inc., Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc.

Marlon Taylor has risen through the ranks of Anacostia & Pacific Co. Inc.'s Pacific Harbor Line (PHL) because of his "incredible ability" to quickly learn and excel in new roles, says PHL President Otis Cliatt, who nominated Taylor as a Rising Star.

Taylor joined PHL as assistant engineer in 1999. By 2008, he had advanced to the positions of locomotive engineer, train dispatcher and trainmaster. As PHL's transportation manager in 2012, he wrote a new rulebook for train and control operations. In March 2013, Taylor was promoted to his current job as director of operations at PHL, which provides rail transportation, maintenance and dispatching services to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

"We have about 33 crew starts per day, so my job is to get those guys out and get those customers served," he says.

He also looks out for PHL employees' health and well-being. In 2011, Taylor led an effort to launch the company's annual health fair, at which workers get their blood pressure, cholesterol and body mass index checked on site.

"We're all busy, and we felt this event would be an easy way for our guys to get a checkup at the company's expense," says Taylor.

Such concern reflects the kind of guy Taylor is. According to Cliatt: "Marlon is a role model who takes his leadership responsibilities seriously, and positively impacts the lives of others."

Taylor's inspiration?

"My life's hero would be my grandmother, Evadney Barber. She was the source of my confidence and my belief that I can get anything done."

Interesting fact?

"I was born on the island of Jamaica."

Favorite pastime?

"Reading, mostly nonfiction."

Backup career choice?

"I really think about nothing else but railroading, to be perfectly honest. This is what I want to do and, hopefully, will be doing for a very long time."
