The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's (ASLRRA) Veterans Recruitment Committee recently recognized North Shore Railroad Co. (NSHR) for its efforts to honor and hire military veterans.

Currently, 15 percent of the company's employees are vets, said NSHR Treasurer and Controller Diana Williams, a U.S. Army veteran, in an item included in the July 9 issue of ASLRRA's newsletter.

NSHR also participated in veterans’ 4th of July festivities in Union County, Pa., by operating two special passenger trains from Lewisburg to Winfield, Pa.; sponsored the 4th Annual Freedom Bike Ride in Central Pennsylvania and the Susquehanna Valley that raises awareness and support for past and present military personnel; and published a special veteran’s edition of its employee newsletter that provides biographical information on workers who have served in various military branches.

The association commends NSHR's work in honoring and recruiting veterans, said ASLRRA Chief Financial Officer Eric O’Neill, the association's representative on the Veterans Recruitment Committee.

"In these years during which more than half of the railroad industry’s current workforce is expected to retire, North Shore’s efforts prove that a veteran’s knowledge and skills bring capability and excellence to the job of running railroads," he said.
