The St. Joe Co. recently entered into an agreement with Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) under which the short-line holding company will operate the Apalachicola Northern Railroad from Port St. Joe per a 10-year lease. The agreement includes three 10-year renewals.

The 96-mile short line, now known as AN Railway L.L.C., will connect the port with the national rail system in Chattahoochee, Fla. St. Joe Co. plans to reopen the deepwater port in Port St. Joe, Fla.

“We look forward to AN Railway’s growing role in building sustainable commerce and creating economic opportunities for the residents of northwest Florida,” said GWI Chief Executive Officer Jack Hellmann in a prepared statement. “We intend to be a catalyst for increasing the flow of freight and commodities through this gateway and enhancing the region’s transportation infrastructure.”

In 2005, GWI acquired the assets of Rail Management Corp. The deal included AN Railway, which now is part of GWI’s southern region.
