Iowa small roads to receive federal grants for flood-damage repairs

Yesterday, Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) announced the state of Iowa will receive $773,353 in federal grants to help fund repairs to flood-damaged rail infrastructure.

Repairs include debris removal, bridge reconstruction, and track aligning and surfacing. The funds will reimburse regionals and short lines operating in 12 counties. The Iowa Department of Transportation will administer the grants through the Flood Damage Restoration for the Iowa River Railroad Program.

“Three years ago, devastating floods hit Iowa causing destruction across our state, including severe damage to our railway system,” said Harkin in a prepared statement. “These railroads are crucial to the safe and efficient movement of goods between Iowa communities and to places outside of our state.”
