Tacoma Rail to host National Railway Historical Society's 'RailCamp'

advertisement

From July 30-Aug. 5, Tacoma Rail will host the National Railway Historical Society’s (NRHS) RailCamp in Tacoma, Wash.

Twelve teenagers will attend the camp — which costs $750 — to learn about railroading. The itinerary calls for spending a day at Tacoma Rail to learn about modern freight-rail operations and shadow some employees to get a first hand feel for the railroading environment. The teenagers also will spend time at Amtrak’s operations in Seattle to observe heavy maintenance on high-speed Talgo trains and an annual inspection conducted on an in-service locomotive.

In addition, the schedule includes stops at the Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie, Wash., and the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad in Mineral, Wash.

NRHS has hosted RailCamps on the East Coast for years, but this is the first time the event will be held on the West Coast, according to Tacoma Rail. The society also will hold a RailCamp July 8-13 in Scranton, Pa., which will focus on the Steamtown National Historic Site and include side trips to Canadian Pacific facilities and a historic streetcar operation.
