Louisville & Indiana to serve new steel customers
advertisement
Two steel companies are setting up shop in the Clarke Maritime Center in Jeffersonville, Ind., an Ohio River port served by Louisville & Indiana Railroad Co.
Steel Dynamics Inc. recently acquired a galvanizing plant formerly operated by GalvPro L.L.C. and plans to use the facility to increase galvanizing capacity by 360,000 tons.
And in August, Kasle Steel Corp. began building a $16 million, 130,000-square-foot facility in the center to produce configured blanks from cold-rolled steel coils for automotive customers.
To handle increasing business, 111-mile Louisville & Indiana recently acquired four GP-39-2 locomotives from Union Pacific Railroad. The short line plans to use the 2,000-horsepower units to replace older, lower-horsepower locomotives, according to a prepared statement.
Louisville & Indiana is owned and operated by Anacostia and Pacific Co. Inc., which also owns New York & Atlantic Railway Co., Pacific Harbor Line Inc., and Chicago Southshore & South Bend Railroad.
