All four short lines Genesee Valley Transportation Co. Inc. (GVT) owns posted double-digit carload growth last year, according to a GVT statement issued Jan. 16.

The Depew, Lancaster & Western Railroad's 2014 carload count was up 16.2 percent compared with 2013's total, the result of increases in pulp, paper and other forest products traffic, GVT Director of Business Development David Blount said.

The Falls Road Railroad recorded a 70.6 percent volume hike based on "increases throughout the agricultural sector," Blount said.

Meanwhile, the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern Railroad's carload volume was up 12.4 percent, thanks to an uptick in "ferrous metals and edible oils" hauls, he added.

Finally, carloads were up 13.4 percent at GVT's Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad. The short line recorded across-the-board increases, with "significant" gains in grain and frac sand moves, Blount said.
