OmniTRAX Logistics manages major steel shipment in Oklahoma

OmniTRAX Logistics Services LLC, an affiliate of OmniTRAX Inc., recently managed the handling and warehousing of 10 million pounds of coiled steel for a transload customer in Sand Springs, Okla., the company announced today.

The endeavor involved a dedicated 50-car train with 225 steel coils each weighing 45,000 pounds. The coils were received from NUCOR Steel in Hickman, Ark., via the OmniTRAX-managed Sand Springs Railway Co. and BNSF Railway Co., according to an OmniTRAX press release.

The steel coil will be shipped to a North American provider of tubing solutions to be made into pipes and structural rods. Until then, the steel is being stored at OmniTRAX Logistics' transload facility in Sand Springs.

"This shipment demonstrates that rail is a competitive option in many instances where it hasn't been utilized previously," said Tim Eklund, vice president of transload and logistics at OmniTRAX.

In addition to Sand Springs, OmniTRAX Logistics operates transload and terminal facilities on OmniTRAX–affiliated railroads in Windsor, Colo.; Brownsville and Borger, Texas; and soon in Grand Forks, British Columbia; and Stockton, Calif.
