The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) approved $20,000 in funds for the Columbia Basin Railroad Co. Inc. to use for a grade crossing improvement project in Adams County.
The railroad plans to use the funds to upgrade train detection, signal control equipment and batteries at a crossing on McManaman Road near Othello, commission officials said in a press release.
McManaman is a two-lane road with a speed limit of 30 mph. The average daily traffic through the crossing is 1,019 vehicles. Two freight trains operate through the crossing daily at up to 10 mph. The upgrades must be completed by Aug. 1.
The $20,000 grant will come from the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund. The project's entire cost is $24,477.58, with the railroad paying the difference.
