Vermont Rail System (VRS) last week announced it has entered into an agreement with New England Southern Railroad (NES) to purchase certain assets and operating rights from the New Hampshire railroad.
The acquisition will allow VRS to expand freight operations in New Hampshire and build on the development of new rail traffic, VRS officials said in a Facebook post.
NES is located in south-central New Hampshire, with a base of operations from the Canterbury Yard, 10 miles north of Concord.
NES’ freight operation over the state-owned White Mountain Branch, between Concord and Lincoln, will continue with no immediate changes in the service levels, VRS officials said.
The acquisition — expected to close June 30 — is subject to New Hampshire Department of Transportation approval, along with necessary Surface Transportation Board approval.
VRS operates five short lines — one in New York and four in Vermont — and a locomotive and car shop in North Walpole, New Hampshire.
