The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Rail Division is accepting applications for Short Line Infrastructure Assistance Program projects.

The division will award matching grants as part of the state's Freight Rail and Rail Crossing Safety Improving program (FRRCSI). Applications are due March 26.

"North Carolina's short-line railroads play a critical role in our state's economy by ensuring that freight can be transported efficiently and safely," said NCDOT Rail Division Director Jason Orthner in a press release.

The FRRCSI supports rail infrastructure health, safety and performance throughout the state, and enables the department to partner with railroads on improvement projects. That partnership helps railroads meet shippers' needs efficiently while also preparing for growing service, NCDOT officials said.

Candidate projects are evaluated on a cost-benefit and merit basis. Grant awards are determined on comparative project rankings.
