AmerenEnergy seeks STB approval to build Illinois line

AmerenEnergy Generating Co. recently filed an exemption notice with the Surface Transportation Board seeking approval to build and operate a 13-mile line between Coffeen and Walshville, Ill.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Ameren Corp., AmerenEnergy plans to build the line between its Coffeen power plant, and Union Pacific Railroad's and Burlington Northern Sante Fe's mainlines to receive coal.

The line would be operated by Coffeen and Western Railroad Co., a soon-to-be-formed railroad subsidiary of AmerenEnergy, according to the filing. The utility already controls short lines Joppa & Eastern and Missouri Central railroads.

AmerenEnergy provides electricity to more than 2 million Illinois and Missouri customers.
