The Ohio Rail Development Commission this week approved a $490,626 grant to Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) for the reconfiguration of connecting tracks between the short line's subdivision lines.
The funds fulfill ORDC's match requirement for the $6.8 million federal Consolidated Railroad Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant the railroad received last month.
The project will reconfigure the connecting tracks between four W&LE subdivision lines — Hartland, Akron, Brewster and Carey — to alleviate traffic blockages while increasing operational fluidity, ORDC officials said in a press release.
Also, ORDC approved a $50,000 grant to Renewable Lubricants Inc. to begin operating as the anchor tenant of a transload facility in Kent, Ohio. Developed in conjunction with Akron Barberton Cluster Railway (ABC), the project calls for establishing a transload facility in southwest Kent where various input oils will be shipped by rail and transferred to truck for final movement to Hartville.
The facility project's total cost will be $600,000. The facility will have two spurs and a total capacity of 20 to 30 rail cars. ABC is a W&LE subsidiary.
