The Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) this week approved a $50,000 grant for the South Point and Ohio Railroad (SPOR) to rehabilitate sections of its rail yard and other infrastructure in South Point.
The grant will fund a project that help SPOR provide transload capabilities to Purecycle Technologies, a plastics company in Ironton, commission officials said in a press release. The project's total cost is an estimated $160,000.
SPOR began operating in 2021 along 7 miles of track within The Point Industrial Park. The railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway and is a subsidiary of Agracel Rail Holdings Co.
The ORDC also approved a $100,000 grant to ORBIS Corp. to expand its manufacturing plant in Urbana. The company plans to invest more than $42 million into the plant, including $356,554 to expand on-site rail infrastructure, commission officials said.
The proposed 50,000-square-foot expansion would accommodate eight large injection machines to increase capacity. The site is served by Indiana and Ohio Railway (IORY), but the additional capacity will bring online a long-inactive rail siding.
