The Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission has approved $26 million for 24 freight-rail infrastructure improvement projects, Gov. Tom Wolf announced yesterday.
The funding will be issued through the state's Rail Transportation Assistance Program and the Rail Freight Assistance Program, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said in a press release.
Pennsylvania has 65 railroads — more than any other state — that operate nearly 5,600 miles of track.
"These investments in Pennsylvania's rail system create jobs, support efficient freight travel and help keep the business community connected to the global economy," Wolf said in a press release.
Railroads receiving the funds include Allegheny Valley Railroad, Pittsburgh and Ohio Central Railroad, R. J. Corman Railroad, Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, West Erie Short Line, Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad and York Railway.
