The North Carolina Railroad Co. announced this week it will provide $1 million for Siemens Mobility’s new manufacturing facility to be built in Lexington, North Carolina.

The funds will help with the cost of construction and materials needed for the new on-site rail infrastructure, NCRR officials said in a press release. The plant will produce an estimated 264 passenger cars per year at build-out.

“This project is a significant achievement; it not only creates jobs for North Carolinians and investment for the state, but also continues to position North Carolina as a leader in the rail industry,” said NCRR President and CEO Carl Warren.

Norfolk Southern Railway and the North Carolina General Assembly also are investment partners in the project.

The $220 million plant will produce passenger coach cars to meet rising demand for passenger-rail service in North America. At the site, Siemens Mobility also will build a first-of-its-kind facility to overhaul locomotive and passenger cars. The new plant is expected to begin operations in 2024.
