Alaska Railroad Corp. (ARRC), federal, state and local officials earlier this month commemorated the 100th anniversary of the driving of the railroad’s golden spike in Nenana.
Guests attending the event included U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Gov. Mike Dunleavy, Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Amit Bose and Nenana Native Association First Chief Caroline Ketzler.
Over the past 100 years, the railroad has been a lifeline in Alaska, connecting communities, fostering economic growth and facilitating the movement of resources and people across the state, several attendees said at the event, according to an ARRC press release.
"Alaska is, in many respects, about a railroad. Anchorage would not have existed without the railroad. Like Alaska, in and of itself, the railroad was all about promise, hope and opportunity," said Gov. Mike Dunleavy.
The railroad now employs more than 700 people.
Meanwhile, ARRC also announced Christy Terry will become vice president of real estate on Aug. 1. Previously, she served as director of external affairs. In her new role, she succeeds Jim Kubitz, who retired in June after more than 25 years with the railroad.
As VP of real estate, Terry will provide guidance and oversight for the division’s real estate, facilities and land services. She joined ARRC 13 years ago as assistant port manager in Seward.
