The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) is accepting applications for the Susan C. Murray Memorial Women's Scholarship Program, which is open to daughters and granddaughters of employees working for ASLRRA-member railroads. The application deadline is Feb. 16.

In late 2003, Commonwealth Business Media created the program to honor Susan Murray, who died that year. She had served as the company's directories division vice president and ASLRRA's exhibition manager.

During her tenure at the association, Murray helped grow ASLRRA's annual convention from 40 tabletop booths in 1987 to the "premier exhibition dedicated to the short line and regional railroad industry," association officials said in a prepared statement. She also served as a mentor to many people in the short-line industry, particularly women railroaders.

The program will provide a $2,000 scholarship per academic year for up to four consecutive years toward a chosen degree. ASLRRA plans to award the scholarships at its annual convention to be held April 2-5 in Anaheim, Calif. The association awarded the first scholarships under the program at its April 2004 annual meeting in St. Louis.
