The Aberdeen Carolina and Western Railway Co. (ACWR) on Dec. 1 filed a request for a verified notice of exemption with the Surface Transportation Board to acquire a 104-mile line in North Carolina from Norfolk Southern Railway.
ACWR has operated the line — which also is known as the Piedmont Subdivision — under a lease and option to purchase agreement since 1989. The line runs between Gulf and Charlotte, and crosses through five counties, according to the STB filing.
ACWR and NS have negotiated a purchase and sale agreement and expect to close the transaction on or after the exemption's effective date. The proposed acquisition would not involve an agreement to limit future interchange with a third-party carrier, ACWR officials wrote in the notice.
ACWR currently operates lines running from Charlotte toward Raleigh, and extending south to Pinehurst, and interchanges with NS and CSX.
