ASLRRA unveils new health insurance program for short lines

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) today announced a new benefit program to help its members address the rising costs of employee health-care coverage.

Provided by HUB International, the "Coalition Health Plan" for ASLRRA members will provide an affordable rate by pooling premiums from a number of companies, which serves to spread risk among a larger pool of people while increasing insurance purchasing power, ASLRRA officials said in a press release.

The self-funded program is designed to help companies manage their costs and save money alongside their employees. Savings resulting from improved population health and more efficient spending go back to the participating company, they said.

The coalition's "simplified" plan designs eliminate "complicated" deductibles and co-insurance. Participants will have access to a dedicated health-care concierge, as well as 24/7 access to a mobile app or website that will enable them to see costs, select providers and schedule appointments, ASLRRA officials said.

ASLRRA members, like many small businesses, are finding it increasingly difficult to find affordable health-care coverage for their employees, said ASLRRA President Chuck Baker.

"As an active member of ASLRRA, HUB understands the operational needs of our industry. They've created a very competitive, flexible program, tailored specifically to companies with 20 or more employees," Baker said.
