BNSF Railway Co. yesterday designated Arizona & California Railroad (ARZC) as the Class I’s 2019 Short Line of the Year for a commitment to “safety, service, growth, investment and velocity.”
A Genesee & Wyoming Inc. subsidiary, ARZC operates a 205-mile line running between Matthie, Arizona, and Cadiz, California. The railroad works with BNSF operating teams in Barstow, California, and Phoenix to handle 20,000 units of overhead traffic annually, BNSF officials said in a press release.
ARZC hauls commodities including agricultural products, construction products, lumber and petroleum products. The railroad has operated injury-free for the past 13 years.
“ARZC’s dedication to safety is evident by its remarkable safety record,” said Merril Lieb, BNSF's assistant vice president of short-line development. “The railroad mirrors that dedication in its continued infrastructure investments, which have produced significant customer growth.”
BNSF announced ARZC’s award during the Class I’s annual Short Line Conference.
BNSF also recognized Texas North Western Railway (TXNW) for its commitment to safety and customer service.
Serving customers in the Texas Panhandle and owned by TNW Corp., TXNW interchanges with BNSF and provides rail-car storage, service, transport and transload services to national, regional and local customers. TXNW has the largest private car storage space in the United States, BNSF officials said.
