Carload Express Inc. has expanded freight-rail service into Virginia through a lease of 14.8 miles of track between Pocomoke City, Maryland, and Hallwood, Virginia.

After the Bay Coast Railroad ceased operation in May, Carload's Delmarva Central Railroad (DCR) entered into a lease and operating agreement with landowner Canonie Atlantic Co. (CAC.) to restore and enhance rail service on the northern portion of what was Bay Coast's route, according to a Carload Express press release.

DCR's Delmar, Delaware, freight service will operate that portion of rail line, with connections to Norfolk Southern Railway via DCR's interchanges at Clayton and Tasker, Delaware.

"Our agreement with CAC supports industrial development on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and provides a long-term solution for rail service in Accomack County," said Carload Express President Mark Rosner.

With the addition, DCR's network totals 177 miles in three states, serving more than 40 customers.
