The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&S) in Colorado yesterday announced plans to build a new company division focusing on contract work for the rail industry.
The division will assist other railroads with equipment and operational needs. In March 2020, D&S’s regular operations as a tourist railroad were shut down due to the pandemic, leading to a need to diversify its portfolio and find other ways to generate revenue, D&S officials said in a press release.
The new division will provide services in accessing equipment, rebuilding and converting steam locomotives, construction and repair of historic passenger cars and consultation and review of operating policies and procedures. Work includes standard and narrow-gauge equipment. The railroad is hiring to support its growth. It also plans to build a new facility to support equipment rehabilitation and an expanded diesel locomotive fleet, company officials said.
“While we are all proud to be employees of the Durango & Silverton Railroad, it is important to us to be able to serve the steam and tourist industry and help keep it alive across the country,” said Matt Cunningham, D&S special projects manager.
