U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) yesterday announced the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) has officially awarded $4.7 million in federal disaster funding to the Chenango Industrial Development Agency to advance the Utica Main Rail Line Revitalization project. In September 2012, Schumer called on the EDA to expedite funding for the project, which involves restoring a New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway line from Chenango Forks to Sherburne that was damaged by Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. The EDA provisionally approved the funding in October 2012.After a historic 100-year flood occurred in 2006, freight-rail service was suspended on 45 miles of track, "making it impossible to send goods from Binghamton to Utica, and cutting off access to important interchanges," said Schumer in a prepared statement."Restoring the rail line will make businesses throughout Chenango County more competitive by making transporting goods easier and cheaper," he said. "What's more, this project will make the rail line more resilient to future disasters."
