Empire Diversified Energy Inc. has established Empire River Rail, a new short line, at the Port of West Virginia.
The initiative marks a milestone for the port's development as a full-service trimodal facility, Empire officials said in a press release.
Empire River Rail will strive to be a clean-energy rail system as it serves the port by connecting the movement and storage of freight. The railroad's focus on sustainability will enable the deployment of carbon-reducing technology.
"The decarbonization of ports is a prime goal for the department of transportation, and the formation of a short line railroad at the Port of West Virginia is a step in helping to meet that goal," said Bernard Brown, chief operating officer at Empire Diversified Energy.
Empire River Rail will operate less than 1 mile of track and interchange with Norfolk Southern Railway.
Empire Diversified Energy's primary location is in Follansbee, West Virginia, where it operates the Port of West of Virginia along with its eco-industrial complex.
