Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s (G&W) U.S. industrial-development efforts in 2020 resulted in 45 new projects representing $1.6 billion in customer investments, the company announced yesterday.

Combined, the customers' investments are expected to generate more than 800 new jobs in communities served by G&W railroads.

The projects included new facilities for shipping automobiles in Fort Wayne, Indiana; for recycling zinc in Cass County, Indiana; for processing ore in Miami, Arizona; for processing animal feed in Fulton, Arkansas; and for mining pozzolan in Aguila, Arizona, G&W officials said in a press release.

"Access to national and international markets is still the driving factor in new rail-served projects," said Kevin Phillips, vice president of industrial development. "Our 2020 wins include projects in more than half of the 42 states served by G&W railroads, representing nearly 47,000 new carloads annually, 65% of which come from four commodity groups: agricultural products, chemicals and plastics, lumber and forest products and minerals and stone."

G&W maintains a data base of more than 500 potential industrial-development properties across its U.S. railroads.
