G&W's Georgia Central Railway to serve Plastic Express distribution center

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) today announced its Georgia Central Railway LP subsidiary will serve a major plastics distribution facility that's under construction in Pooler, Georgia.

Georgia Central will transport bulk plastic resin to the new Plastic Express multi-commodity transloading center beginning in late 2019. Carloads are expected to exceed 5,000 annually. The resin and other bulk commodities will be repackaged and trucked to the nearby Port of Savannah for export to international markets.

One of 13 G&W railroads that operate in Georgia, the 211-mile Georgia Central transports freight between Macon and Savannah and interchanges with CSX, Norfolk Southern Railway and G&W's Heart of Georgia Railroad.

"The location near Savannah and access to two Class I railroads made Georgia Central an ideal choice to serve this new $172 million facility," said Plastic Express President and Chief Executive Officer Ray Hufnagel in a press release. "We have worked with G&W at other terminal locations across the country, and the focus of G&W’s industrial development team and the railroad's flexibility to meet our transportation needs makes them an easy choice to partner with on this project."
 
Developed by Capital Development Partners Inc., Plastic Express' 197-acre site in the Savannah Port Logistics Center will serve as a magnet for attracting additional development nearby, G&W officials said. The logistics center is one of more than 500 potential industrial development sites located along the company's North American regionals and short lines, they said.
 
G&W worked collaboratively with Capital Development Partners, the state of Georgia, Georgia Ports Authority and Georgia Central to create a transportation solution for Plastic Express, said G&W President of North America Michael Miller.

"This win demonstrates how important it is to work together to attract new business and further strengthens our presence in Georgia," he said. "We look forward to providing the new facility with the customer-focused service that our short lines are known for and working to bring additional business to the site."
