More than five dozen maintenance-of-way workers employed by Genesee & Wyoming's Railroad Engineering Services last week voted in favor of becoming Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) members.
The nearly 70 workers — who are staffed on traveling production gangs — are the first G&W mobile gangs to join the union’s ranks, BMWED officials said in a press release. They are members of three tie gangs and two bridge and building crews that perform MOW work throughout G&W’s system.
A vast majority of the workers approved the BMWED representation by an 8-to-1 margin, union officials said. The next step will be to reach a collectively bargained agreement with G&W that addresses wages, benefits and quality-of-life issues, they added.
G&W’s four North American regions include 113 regionals and short lines that operate more than 13,000 miles of track in 43 states and four Canadian provinces.
