Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals

Genesee & Wyoming registers carload gains in June, second quarter

Last month, Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) North American subsidiary railroads moved 72,462 carloads, a 6.5 percent increase compared with June 2005.

However, monthly “same railroad” carloads dropped 9.3 percent primarily because of a decrease in coal coke and ores traffic. Same railroad carloads exclude traffic carried by railroads acquired between April 2005 and June 2006.

During the second quarter, GWI’s railroads moved 206,858 carloads, a 13.2 percent increase compared with the same 2005 period. Same railroad carloads decreased 6 percent primarily because of declining lumber and forest products, coal coke and ores, and pulp and paper traffic.

GWI owns and operates regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Bolivia.
