Rail News: Short Lines & Regionals
Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) recently contracted RMI to centralize operational and accounting functions for three short lines the holding company acquired from Georgia-Pacific Corp. earlier this year.
Using RMI's RailConnect® suite of Web-based applications, the Chattahoochee Industrial Railroad, Arkansas, Louisiana & Mississippi Railroad Co., and Fordyce & Princeton Railroad Co. will trade billing information with customers and centralize car reporting functions through GWI's Jacksonville, Fla., office.
GWI also plans to install interfaces between RMI's and Georgia-Pacific's Web-based systems to speed rail cars through Georgia-Pacific facilities.
"Our strategy [focuses on] operating multiple railroads from regionally located customer service centers," said Jim Benz, president of GWI’s Rail Link Inc. subsidiary — which operates the short lines — in a prepared statement. "We expect to gain significant operational and financial improvements by operating these railroads from our customer service center in Jacksonville."
