Greenville & Western Railway Co. L.L.C. (GRLW) has two weeks under its belt as the operator of a line CSX Transportation had planned to abandon. On Oct. 21, the new short line began operating trains on a 12.8-mile line between Belton and Pelzer, S.C., that parent Western Carolina Railway Service Corp. purchased from the Class I.

Western Carolina Railway officials plan to work with Anderson County Office of Economic Development representatives to attract business along the route. The short line owns land that would serve as a suitable site for a transloading or distribution facility, said GRLW President Steven Hawkins in a prepared statement.

Formed in 2003, Western Carolina Railway aims to restore rail lines, and provide freight- and passenger-rail services in the Carolinas.
