The Canadian government and provincial government of Ontario will each contribute CA$10.5 million toward a rail infrastructure project at Huron Central Railway Inc. in northern Ontario.
Combined with contributions from Huron Central Railway, the total investment in the project will be CA$31.5 million, Transport Canada officials said yesterday in a press release. The federal dollars will come from the National Trade Corridors Fund.
The project calls for improving track to support freight-rail service between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury.
"This investment will have important benefits for the region, such as increasing carload volumes in commodity sectors, relieving ongoing supply-chain congestion and improving the reliability of rail service in northern Ontario," Transport Canada officials said.
Huron Central Railway is part of Genesee & Wyoming Canada.
