The Iron Ore Co. of Canada-Rio Tinto (IOC) yesterday announced that it will invest CA$750,000
over three years to support research and training at the Cegep de Sept-Îles RAIL Center of Expertise in Quebec, Canada.

IOC has been working with the technical college for several years, providing equipment that is now used to train students. Notably, IOC has donated a train-handling simulator and committed to providing the campus with signaling equipment, switch motors, two rail cars and track detectors, for a total estimated value of more than CA$850,000, IOC officials said in a press release.

The new partnership aims to strengthen the position of Sept-Îles as a hub for railway training by tailoring its offering to the needs of the rail industry, which is already well established on Quebec’s North Shore, IOC officials said.

The latest investment will enable students, employees of IOC and other companies in the region to improve their technical skills in rolling stock, railway maintenance and other fields, company official added.

IOC and the RAIL Center of Expertise are also working together on technical assistance and applied research. Those efforts involve developing innovative technologies for heavy transportation and preventative maintenance protocols designed to make railways safer and more efficient.
