The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority (JRA) recently purchased 19.5 acres in Mifflin County, Pa., from the county commission for $66,000. The land will be used for future industrial development. At one time used by a steel company and known as the North Yards, the property features railroad track running along one border. The site will be served by the Juniata Valley Railroad (JVRR), one of six short lines that operate on JRA-owned track in Pennsylvania. Operated by North Shore Railroad Co., JVRR currently serves 10 customers. Since its inception in 1996, the short line's annual carloads have nearly tripled, according to an item in the JRA's March newsletter. Although specific plans have not been finalized for the property, some yard tracks and a wye track might be installed, said JRA Executive Director Jeff Stover. "There is potential here for rail-served industrial development," he said. "This is one of many projects the authority has undertaken to expand railroad infrastructure in central Pennsylvania."
