The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is soliciting project submissions for the state’s Rail Service Improvement Program.

The financial program aims to assist short lines in the rehabilitation of tracks and components, bridges, sidings, yards, shops and buildings.

An estimated $10 million in program funding is available for selected projects that enhance safety and promote economic efficiency and sustainability in the state’s rail network, KDOT officials said in a press release. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 1 and the awarded projects will be announced in spring 2024.

Regionals, short lines or any owner or lessee of industry track located on or adjacent to a Class II or Class III railroad in the state are eligible to apply for the grants.

Applicants are required to provide a 30% match of a project’s total cost. There are no minimum or maximum project awards, KDOT officials said.
